API 620 venting rates for large welded low-pressure tanks
Large welded low-pressure tanks are never completely sealed. Changes in ambient temperature, tank filling and withdrawal, pumping operations and vapour accumulation can create pressure differences that require controlled relief. Venting capacity must therefore be matched to the credible operating and emergency conditions without allowing vapour to accumulate near ignition sources.
API 620 establishes design and construction requirements for large welded low-pressure storage tanks, including provisions for roof vents and pressure-vacuum vents. Detailed vent sizing is commonly addressed through API 2000, while project specifications may also invoke NFPA 30, operator engineering standards and applicable Australian requirements.
For Australian engineers, compliance starts with identifying the edition contractually adopted by the client. Document Bays provides downloadable PDF copies for immediate access, helping teams obtain the governing technical references without relying on shared or outdated files.
Scope of API 620 venting
API 620 applies to tanks designed for low-pressure atmospheric storage rather than high-pressure process vessels. Its venting provisions work with the tank’s roof design, shell geometry, appurtenances and allowable pressure and vacuum limits. The vent arrangement must also accommodate the products and maximum operating rates specified for the installation.
Low pressure does not mean that relief capacity is optional. A tank can develop damaging positive pressure during rapid filling or unusual vapour generation, and it can suffer partial vacuum when liquid is withdrawn or the contents cool. API 620 design therefore treats venting as part of the complete tank system rather than as an accessory added after construction.
Normal and emergency relief
Normal venting covers routine pressure changes caused by thermal breathing, maximum filling, maximum emptying and withdrawal from storage. The calculated rate must accommodate the worst credible combination of these conditions without interrupting transfer operations or imposing unnecessary loads on the vent assembly.
Emergency venting responds to abnormal events such as an external fire or rapid vapour generation. Its required flow is separate from the normal rate and must remain available when the tank contains its maximum permitted liquid quantity. Both functions may be provided by different devices, but their capacities and discharge paths must be assessed as one overall system.
Calculating the required capacity
Vent calculations generally follow the methodology in the adopted edition of API 2000. Inputs include tank dimensions, product vapour pressure, liquid density, ambient and design temperatures, transfer rates, filling and withdrawal conditions, allowable pressure, allowable vacuum and the resistance of connected piping. Rates calculated in imperial units must be converted and checked consistently for Australian application.
The principal operating cases are compared below before individual devices are selected and their flows are added.
| Relieving condition | What the rate represents | Design checks |
|---|---|---|
| Normal venting | Routine breathing, filling, emptying and withdrawal | Maximum transfer conditions, temperature effects and vapour accumulation |
| Emergency venting | Credible abnormal pressure generation, including external fire | Maximum liquid inventory, fire exposure and unrestricted discharge |
| Pressure-vacuum operation | Relief at predetermined positive and negative settings | Certified capacities, leakage, vacuum settings and reduced vapour emissions |
Calculated relief must be available through the complete installed path. Pipe length, bends, fittings, screens and discharge elevation can reduce effective capacity. A pressure-vacuum vent also needs verified pressure and vacuum ratings rather than reliance on a generic flow figure.
Hardware, detection and commissioning
Vent outlets should be positioned to discharge safely away from ignition sources, occupied areas and openings into buildings. Rain protection, corrosion-resistant materials and freeze protection may be needed, but these features must not create an unacceptable flow restriction. Emergency vents should remain independent of operational controls and normally closed isolation valves.
Factories with tank systems, process plant or warehouses can also use the principles in factory smoke detection to strengthen early-warning protection. Smoke detection is not a substitute for vapour detection or relief sizing, but it forms part of a broader industrial safety system.
Commissioning should confirm vent orientation, unobstructed discharge, correct settings and the absence of accidental isolation. Inspection records should also cover corrosion, screen condition, liquid collection and any changes made to transfer rates or stored products.
Australian compliance and site conditions
Australian projects must reconcile API requirements with the Dangerous Goods Code, relevant state dangerous-goods legislation, Safe Work Australia guidance and the National Standard for the Control of Hydrocarbon Liquids at Bulk Storage Facilities. Equipment selection around hazardous areas may also require compliance with AS/NZS IEC 60079. An API standard becomes a legal requirement only when incorporated into an approved design, contract or regulatory instrument.
Environmental conditions vary significantly across Australian tank farms. Facilities around Gladstone, Kwinana, Geelong, Port Hedland and Darwin face different combinations of high ambient temperatures, cyclone exposure, salt-laden air and corrosion. These conditions affect vent materials, roof loading, inspection frequency and the documentation that must accompany each design change.
Digital standards avoid courier delays and customs charges for the PDF itself, although imported tanks and components still follow normal customs procedures. Australian customers can also select supported currencies and major payment methods. Rural operators may find a practical farm perspective from Jerry’s Aussie Farm helpful when applying formal tank controls to smaller fuel and chemical-storage installations.
Obtain the governing documents
Before purchase, check the edition specified by the drawings, purchase specification and client. API 620, API 2000 and any referenced fire or dangerous-goods code form a coordinated document set, and mixing revisions can produce incompatible vent assumptions.
